Good Form Resources

Cadence, Tempo, and Stride Rate

The third step to running with good form is maintaining a stride rate of approximately 180 foot falls per minute (90 left, 90 right). To get a sense of what that tempo will feel like, follow this link and set the online metronome to 180 BPM. If you enjoy running with music, here are a few tools to help you organize a playlist that will help you keep your cadence up:

    • MixMeister BPM Analyzer - This handy little program is a free download for both PC and Mac. Drag and drop your music files into the program and it will tell you the tempo of each track. It seems to work best if you only analyze an album’s-worth of tunes at a time. Trying to do your entire music library at once will likely lock up the application.
    • jog.fm - Fantastic website for finding tracks at a specific tempo. Includes playlist-building, listen now options, and download links for your convenience.
    • JogTunes.com – Not quite as awesome as jog.fm, but still pretty useful.
    • iTunes Metronome - a free itunes download of a metronome. Works with Mac & PC.
