Coach’s Award

2010 Recipient

Jane Howe

Jane grew up in Trenton, Ontario, the daughter of a Track and Field and Cross-Country coach. She moved to Kingston in 1988 to attend the Royal Military College, where she competed at the OUA level in Cross-Country. In 1991 she was named RMC’s outstanding female athlete.

Upon her graduation from RMC in 1992, “Captain” Howe continued to run competitively, competeing in the World Military XC Championships and dabbling in marathon running. She also continued to compete in triathlons, a sport she was introduced to while in high school. Jane’s military, and later civilian, accounting career took her across Canada, but she eventually returned to Kingston in 2003.

Kingston provided an opportunity to train and race with like-minded runners and triathletes, and Jane’s focus became the Ironman triathlon. in 2005, Jane achieved a lifetime goal by qualifying for and competing in the World Ironman Triathlon championships in Kona, Hawaii. In her race, she finished 18th in the world in her age group, while running the Ironman marathon through the lava fields in a Boston-qualifying time. She has vowed to repeat this experience in the year 2025, but for now has placed triathlon on hold for she has always considered herself “a runner”, rather than a “triathlete who runs”.

Since 2005, Jane has raced a variety of distances from 5k’s to Marathons, always pursuing the elusive Personal Best while consistently placing in her age group. She was the Women’s overall winner at the 2006 Tibbett’s Point 10k run in Cape Vincent, New York and placed second overall in the 2006 KTown Long Course Triathlon. She is also passing on her running legacy to her two young daughters; three-year-old Robin and one-year-old Rachel. She is also currently the Treasurer of the Kingston Road Runners and the Race Director of February’s KRRA Twosome Run.

In 2010, Jane has been a regular attendee of the KRRA Tuesday night “interval” workouts, where her often predictable refrain of “one more loop” is always sure to get a bit more out of at least one more runner every practice. She continues to race, focusing for now on 5k’s and 10k’s and has begun to coach some of her fellow runners to find new levels of speed and endurance.

Congratulations to Jane on her 2010 Coaches Award!
